Mike’s campaign to criminalise squatting is close to victory as the Justice Secretary, the Rt Hon Kenneth Clarke QC MP, voiced his support for a change in the law to end the days of squatters’ rights.
Mike has been leading the campaign since his election in May 2010 to end the practice which blights his constituency and the city of Brighton & Hove.
Having recently tabled Early Day Motion 1545 calling for squatting to be criminalised, Mike has been actively seeking a change in the law. Responses to a recent Parliamentary Question showed that the Ministry of Justice itself has fallen victim to squatters, with one of its building being occupied twice by squatters in 2009.
Mike commented, “Whilst squatting is a major problem in Brighton & Hove, it is an issue that law abiding citizens are faced with across the country. I am glad that my campaign is gaining momentum, and that the recent EDM that I tabled has received cross-party support.
My campaign is based on justice. The law doesn’t currently support the people who deserve its protection and since the beginning of my campaign I’ve been seeking to redress that balance. The fact that the Ministry of Justice has fallen victim to squatters twice, with the same building being occupied, highlights the absurdity of the status quo. There is currently no deterrent to squatting in law and this must change.”
