New Homeless Funding Welcomed by Mike

Mike has welcomed a £250,000 homelessness funding boost for Brighton & Hove.

Mike’s colleague the Rt Hon Grant Shapps MP, Housing Minister, has announced an £8 million funding boost towards the national No Second Night Out pledge. Brighton & Hove has received more funding than any other city, excluding Central London, with a grant of £248,100 which will be used to support the work of Brighton Housing Trust.

Commenting, Mike said: “Everyone in Brighton & Hove should be able to count on a safe, warm place to stay, and I welcome this help from the Government to support that. I look forward to working with Brighton Housing Trust to make sure that nobody spends a second night out on the streets and that those in difficulty are given every chance to rebuild their lives.”

Mike added, “I have long made the case that there is no link between squatting and genuine homelessness. A talented, resourceful, web-savvy and often well-off student is your typical Brighton squatter. Quite frankly it’s insulting for squatting supporters to compare rough sleepers with squatters. We should be putting huge resources into helping rough sleepers – and that is what the Government is doing.”
