Mike Weatherley, the Conservative Member of Parliament for Hove and Portslade, has been given an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of the Duke of York Cinema.
Following his work on Intellectual Property Rights and copyright, Mike was invited by the Cinema Exhibitors’ Association to see behind the scenes at one of his local cinemas. Naturally, Mike, who has a business backing in film copyright, picked the famous Duke of York’s and was given a tour by long-standing Assistant Manager Felicity Beckett. As well as the main auditorium, Mike was shown the projection room, and given a demonstration of how both digital and traditional 35mm films are presented.
Commenting, Mike said: “Brighton & Hove have a unique place in the history of cinema and I was delighted to have the opportunity to be shown around Britain’s oldest continually operating cinema. Amazingly the Duke of York’s has been open since 1910 and is still going strong. As well as a new venture in the North Laine, the cinema has upgraded its seats and is looking to expand in the near future. Local residents from across Brighton & Hove should come and see for themselves this wonderful cinema which is steeped in history.”
