New Intellectual Property Crime Unit Backed by Mike

Mike Weatherley, the Conservative Member of Parliament for Hove and Portslade, is backing the new Police Intellectual Property Crime Unit (PIPCU), which is due to launch in September.

The unit will be dedicated to tackling online piracy and other forms of intellectual property crime such as the sale of counterfeit goods. It will be one of the first units of its kind in the world, which will ensure that the UK stays at the forefront of intellectual property enforcement.

Mike is pleased that the Government is taking this matter seriously, as IP crime is a threat to the creative industries, which are worth more than Ł36 billion a year and employ more than 1.5 million people. The new PIPCU is being funded by the Intellectual Property Office, which is part of the Department for Business, Innovation & Skills.

Commenting, Mike said: “The formation of this new IP crime unit is a great step in the right direction to tackling IP-related crimes and hunting down those who are illegally profit off the work of others. Our creative industries are vital to our economy so it is only right that we give them the protection that they deserve. I look forward to seeing positive results come through in the near future once the team is up and running.”
